"Teacher as Writer"
program includes:
"Tigard teacher shows the write stuff," Tigard-Tualatin Times, April 17, 2008 "Going write to the source," Portland Tribune, April 22, 2008 COW Announces: “Power of Ten” Ten hours of targeted professional development for teachers Community of Writers (C.O.W.) is pleased to offer four dynamic new classes developed to provide in-depth writing support. We call these new courses “The Power of Ten” because we believe ten hours of targeted professional development can significantly impact student writing performance. Trait Date will inspire you with practical ideas and strategies. Learn how to systematically introduce and reinforce each trait and address specific modes. Leave with devices that you can use tomorrow, including those pesky conventions. Jumpstart your reluctant writers and inspire all your students with The Blank Page. Motivate, encourage and activate your students with hundreds of prompts and instructional strategies that address the writing traits. Student Writing Conferences addresses this question: How can I respond appropriately to every student during individual conferences? Learn how to structure class time in order to meet with each writer on a regular basis. Participants are encouraged to bring actual student writing samples to gain hands-on experience in the workshop. Treasure Hunt helps your students mine the treasure of their story through effective revision. Promote revision strategies as the tools in this process. Cost: $250.00 per teacher without credit, and $325.00 for one credit hour through the University of Oregon. Scheduling is dependent upon the availability in geographical areas outside the Portland metropolitan How to make The Power of Ten happen at your school: 1) Get at least ten staff members together and select a class. 2) Get everyone to agree on a schedule (dates and times) for the ten hours. 3) Contact Jan Smith at jan@communityofwriters.com or (503) 546-1012 to book a class. ******************* To read the article on Community of Writers that appeared in the recent Oregon Education Association (OEA) magazine, click here.
